Understanding Qi: The Essence of Acupuncture
Qi (pronounced "Chee" in Chinese and "Ki" in Japanese) is a fundamental concept in acupuncture. The application of acupuncture needles or tools to specific acupoints aims to influence the flow and circulation of Qi/Ki in the body.
What is Qi?
While commonly translated as "energy," this interpretation doesn’t capture Qi’s depth. I consider Qi to be the capacity of a system in the body to perform its designated functions. Disruption in the Qi of an organ will result in dysfunction of that organ. For example, the Qi of the lungs governs our breathing, disruption may be experienced as difficulty breathing or coughing. The Qi of the Spleen-Pancreas governs gut function etc.
Qi is produced from food and air. It flows through a complex, net-like system throughout the entire body. The primary pathways are known as meridians or channels, which function like highways connecting internal organs to the limbs and head. Acupuncture points are sites where the Qi can be accessed and influenced.
Observing Qi Through Emotions
One of the most accessible ways to recognise Qi movement in your body is through emotions. Different feelings can trigger immediate physical responses: anger may cause the Qi to rise, sadness tends to make the Qi sink, while anxiety and excitement may create sensations akin to "butterflies in the stomach."
What Do Practitioners Look For?
When assessing a patient's Qi, practitioners evaluate both quantity and movement.
Qi Deficiency: A lack of Qi may present as poor appetite, shortness of breath, urinary issues, fatigue, weakness, a pale tongue, and a weak pulse.
Qi Stagnation: Impaired movement of Qi can manifest as pain, stiffness, headaches, bloating, and mood disturbances such as irritability and depression.
Rebellious Qi: When Qi of an organ travels in an abnormal direction, resulting in symptoms like acid reflux, vomitting, dizziness, headaches or coughing.
Understanding and regulating Qi with acupuncture can lead to increased feelings of well-being. Connecting with your Qi, may empower you to engage in a deeper journey towards balance and harmony.
